Young In Prison

Around the world there are over a million children living in prison under terrible circumstances. The Young in Prison Foundation wants to offer these children a better future by giving them the opportunity to develop themselves and by providing personal support. The children learn practical, useful skills that open up perspectives on employment. They gain self confidence through projects and courses that focus on creativity, sports and education. Prison may in this way become an institution that facilitates rehabilitation, instead of a ‘crime school'. At the moment Young in Prison has projects in Colombia, Malawi, Suriname and South Africa.

Both in The Netherlands and in all our target countries, art and creativity play a role of the utmost importance. We perceive art and creativity to be a form of self expression that has a huge value in itself, and also to be fruitful means to empowerment. Thus, by combining sports and art with education we work to raise their level of self esteem, a virtue that is so important to them but is always in danger of getting lost in the environment of prison life.

In The Netherlands YiP works on fundraising in a creative way and always explores fundraising opportunities in the cultural field. For example, in November we will proudly present the new edition of the biannual YiPArt photo exposition and auction (the largest photo auction of the Netherlands!). The entire profit will come to the benefit of the incarcerated children.

Since 2009 Young in Prison is active in Malawi (South East Africa). Would you like to know more about our projects and our organization? Check http://www.younginprison.nl/ or http://www.younginprison.org/
