Time to whip up some protest!Sex in the city: a lively debate about the growing prudishness of Amsterdam
AMSTERDAM Since the fascinated outrage with bare buttocks on the boats of Canal Pride last summer, a climate of prudishness has tightened its grip on Amsterdam. The complaints are becoming ever more strident, and (gay advocacy group) COC Nederland has officially declared against the worrying trend. Because in a city where sexuality becomes taboo, homosexuality is always the first to suffer! Whipping up a backlash: COC Nederland has formed a kinky pact with Wasteland, organiser of the internationally famous fetish party catering to straight & gay alike. Together they will hold a debate on Friday 22 January entitled Sex in de Stad, a discussion in three blocks on the importance of sexual and creative expression in Amsterdam.
Rappers Surya and Pharao will start the evenings proceedings with their number Blijf van me stad af (Hands off my City), in which they spell out the painful points of the attack on Amsterdam. After this, the ring is given over to three 20 minute slots, for creatives, conservatives and policy makers (and a mixture of all three) to make their points.
In the anti-prude corner, speakers such as photographer and provocateur Erwin Olaf, COC Nederland vice-chair Vera Bergkamp, nachtburgemeester (Mayor of the Night) candidate Jennifer Hopelezz, representatives of the pressure group AiAmsterdam, Groenlinks party chair Marieke Zin-in-Seksuele-Vrijheid van Doorninck and dj/producer Isis.
They will be clashing verbal swords with establishment heavyweights such as the city councillor with the portfolio for culture Carolien Gehrels, chair of the city centre council district Els Iping, (dubbed Queen of the Petty Rules by Het Parool newspaper), and anti-porno babe Myrthe Hilkens (author of the book McSex).
Wasteland will provide entertainment, but fear not: it will remain within the boundaries of, er... what they would describe frankly as pretty tame. Music during the night by Dauphin en TessisMore//When harry met Sally. The whole presentation is in capable hands of Andre Witbreuk.
The debate starts at 20.00, door open at 19.30; dont miss it! - Rozenstraat 14, Amsterdam, Netherlands.
